Brownfields

Section: Division A, Title VII | Agency: Dept. of Environmental Protection

Brownfields are real property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. EPA awards grants through its regional offices directly to local governments for the assessment, cleanup, and redevelopment of brownfields sites and other sites with actual or perceived contamination. EPA identified the projects to receive brownfield funds in May 2009: Central Florida Regional Planning Council ($1 million); and Clearwater, Cocoa and Tampa ($400,000 each).

Brief description of program or funding including funding distribution method (formula or competitive grant): Brownfields are real property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant.  Cleaning up and reinvesting in these properties takes development pressures off of undeveloped, open land, and both improves and protects the environment.  EPA awards grants through its regional offices directly to local governments for the assessment, cleanup, and redevelopment of brownfields sites and other sites with actual or perceived contamination.

When funds are expected to be available: EPA announced grant awards to local governments in May 2009.

How long are funds available: EPA has complete control of the Brownfield moneys.

Conditions or prerequisites for accessing funds (include matching or MOE requirements): No state match is required.  EPA awarded funds to local governments based on Brownfield grant applications submitted to EPA Region 4 in October 2008.
