Superfund
Section: Division A, Title VII | Agency: Dept. of Environmental Protection
Brief description of program or funding including funding distribution method (formula or competitive grant): The Superfund program was set up to locate, investigate and clean up the highest-priority sites contaminated with hazardous waste. EPA directly administers the program in cooperation with states and tribal governments. EPA principally uses a hazard ranking system to evaluate sites and place them on the National Priorities List (NPL). Only sites on the NPL in Florida were considered for these funds. EPA identified three Florida projects to receive Superfund moneys in April, 2009. Those projects are Escambia Treating in Pensacola (up to $5 million); Tower Chemical in Clermont ($5-$10 million); and United Metals in Marianna ($5-$10 million).
When funds are expected to be available: EPA identified three Florida projects to receive Superfund moneys in April 2009.
How long are funds available: Funds are expected to be available until project completion.
Conditions or prerequisites for accessing funds (include matching or MOE requirements): Funds may only be spent on sites on the NPL in Florida. EPA selected the sites to be funded; Florida had no input in the selection process. No upfront state match is required; however, the state will have to be provide a 10% match (up to $2.5 million) as projects progress. This match can be provided within normal DEP waste program budget resources.
