Temporary Assistance for Needy Families

Section: Division B, Title II | Agency: Dept. of Children and Families

Temporary emergency contingency fund reimburses states 80% of increased expenditures on basic assistance, short-term non-recurring benefits or subsidized employment.

Brief description of program or funding including funding distribution method (formula or competitive grant):      Program assists families with children within four broad purposes including enabling children to be cared for in their own homes and reducing dependency of needy parents by providing job preparation and work and marriage formula.  The additional funding will be awarded based on States’ qualifying expenditures in three categories: Basic Assistance, Non-Recurrent Short Term Expenditures, and Subsidized Employment Expenditures.

When funds are expected to be available:   Awards will be given quarterly for meeting the requirements for receiving the funds.  There is no date anticipated for receiving the first award.

How long are funds available:    New awards will be given through the end of FFY 2010.  It appears that the same timeline for spending the additional awards applies as for the TANF base funding: 2 years for all activities/allowable expenditures and the remaining year for Cash Assistance only.

Conditions or prerequisites for accessing funds (include matching or MOE requirements):  For full details of conditions and other program requirements, see related file for download.
